Google Business Profile Not Showing Up? Here's Why

April 02, 2026

You set up your Google Business Profile. You added your address, phone number, and services. But when you search for your business - or for your services in your area - you don't see it.

This is one of the most common frustrations for contractors and home service business owners. The good news is that it's almost always fixable. Here's what's probably going wrong and how to fix it.

You Haven't Verified Your Profile

This is the most common reason a Google Business Profile doesn't show up. Google requires you to verify that you own or operate the business before it displays your profile in search results.

Verification methods include:

  • Postcard by mail. Google sends a postcard to your business address with a PIN code. This can take 5-14 days.
  • Phone verification. Some businesses can verify by phone call or text.
  • Email verification. Available for certain business categories.
  • Video verification. Google may ask you to record a short video of your business location.

If you never completed verification, your profile exists but it's invisible to the public. Log into your Google Business Profile and check your verification status.

Your Profile Is Suspended

Google suspends profiles that violate its guidelines. Common reasons for suspension:

  • Using a keyword-stuffed business name (like "Best Roofing Company Dallas TX" instead of your actual business name).
  • Listing an address where you don't actually operate from.
  • Creating multiple profiles for the same business.
  • Using a virtual office or PO Box as your address.
  • Having information that conflicts with other online sources.

If your profile is suspended, you'll see a notice when you log in. You'll need to fix the violation and submit a reinstatement request through Google.

Your Business Information Is Incomplete

Google favors complete profiles over incomplete ones. If you only filled in the basics, your profile may not appear in competitive local searches.

Make sure these sections are complete:

  • Business name (legal name, no keyword stuffing).
  • Address or service area.
  • Phone number.
  • Website URL.
  • Business hours (including special hours).
  • Business category (primary and secondary).
  • Services offered (with descriptions).
  • Business description (750 characters max, use them all).
  • Photos (at least 10-20 to start).

The more complete your profile, the more signals Google has to determine your relevance for local searches.

You Don't Have Enough Reviews

If your profile has zero or very few reviews, it's much harder to appear in local search results - especially the Map Pack (the top three results with the map).

Reviews are one of the top ranking factors for local search. A profile with 5 reviews is going to get buried by competitors with 50 or 100.

Start building reviews immediately. Ask every customer, send a direct link, and respond to every review you receive.

Your NAP Is Inconsistent

NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone Number. Google cross-references your information across the internet. If your business name, address, or phone number differs between your Google Business Profile, your website, Yelp, BBB, and other directories, it confuses Google.

Common inconsistencies:

  • "123 Main St" on Google but "123 Main Street" on Yelp.
  • Different phone numbers on different listings.
  • Old addresses that were never updated.
  • Business name variations (like including "LLC" in some places but not others).

Audit your listings and make sure your NAP is identical everywhere.

You're Searching Outside Your Service Area

Your Google Business Profile is tied to a physical location and service area. If you search from a location outside your defined service area, you may not see your profile.

Try this: search for your services while physically in your service area, or use Google's "Search from a location" feature to simulate a search from within your market. You may find that your profile does appear - just not as broadly as you want.

To expand your visibility:

  • Make sure your service area is accurately defined in your profile.
  • Create city-specific pages on your website for each area you serve.
  • Build citations and get reviews that mention the cities you work in.

Your Category Is Wrong

Your primary business category has a huge impact on which searches trigger your profile. If you chose a category that doesn't match what people are searching for, you won't show up.

For example, if you're a plumber but selected "General Contractor" as your primary category, you won't appear for "plumber near me" searches.

Review your categories:

  • Primary category should be your most specific main service. "Plumber," "Roofing Contractor," "HVAC Contractor," etc.
  • Secondary categories should cover additional services. "Water Heater Installation Service," "Drain Cleaning Service," etc.

Your Website Is Weak

Your Google Business Profile and your website are connected. If your website is thin (few pages, little content, slow loading speed), it weakens your overall online presence - and that affects your profile's visibility.

Strengthen your website by:

  • Adding dedicated service pages for each service.
  • Building location pages for each city you serve.
  • Publishing helpful content that targets local keywords.
  • Ensuring fast load times and mobile-friendly design.

Take Action Today

If your Google Business Profile isn't showing up, don't wait. Every day it's invisible is a day your competitors are getting calls that could be yours.

Start with verification, then complete every section of your profile. Fix any NAP inconsistencies, build up your reviews, and strengthen your website. Most contractors see their profile start appearing in local results within 2-4 weeks of making these fixes.

Still Can't Figure Out Why You're Not Showing Up?
